Brits ‘open up’ when online
More than two-thirds of Brits are regularly chatting online according to new research by ChitChat Bingo.
The results, drawn from a survey of 1,000 people reveal wide differences across the country and the generations with more than 90 per cent of people aged between 18 and 24 regularly chatting online. Usage declines with age to around a third of those aged over 65.
Four times as many people caught up with friends on Facebook as did so on MSN or other live chat forums – and despite media clamour, fewer than 2 per cent of those questioned chatted through Twitter.
More than a quarter of respondents admitted they opened up more online – and nearly a tenth of us (8.9%) reveal a wilder side or make up a new personality (9%). The older generation is clearly living up to its ‘silver surfer’ moniker as around a fifth said they chatted on Facebook – and a further five per cent used MSN.

Britain’s Loose Lips League Table
We prefer to do it in queues rather than lifts, hairdressers do it best and nearly half of us are it more than twice a week – it seems Brits can’t get enough of small talk.
Research by Chit Chat Bingo paints a vivid picture of Britain’s conversational habits with Belfast topping the loose lips league (see league table below) – and more than 15 per cent of us finding romance from conversations with strangers.
- Nearly two-fifths of us chat to a stranger about once a week
- More than half say small talk brightens their day
- The weather and sport are the top conversation topics
- ‘Do you come here often’ is regarded as the worst small talk opener
- Simon Cowell and The Queen are most popular ‘dream conversations’
- People chat more openly online than in person
- Friendships, romance and marriage have been started from small talk
Catherine Blyth, author of The Art of Conversation, comments: “Many people say they despise small talk, but without it there would be no big conversations. It exercises our wits, improves well being and changes lives. Because everyone we encounter is a portal to another world, and small talk is what opens the door.”
Lee Knott, head of marketing services for Chit Chat Bingo, added: “We know from our customers how much they love talking to other players online and given that more than half of us say that making small talk brightens our day we should all do it more often.”
Men v women
It seems there is a divide between men and women when it comes to making small talk – nearly three times as many men (14.4%) prefer to chat in a bar compared to women (5.2%) whereas females are twice as likely to catch up at the school gate (7.8%) than men (4%). Equally, men are three times as likely as women to discuss sport (29.6%) while women are twice as likely to natter about their favourite TV programmes (18.2%).
Why we do it
More than half of us (56%) say that making small talk brightens our day – and nearly a third highlight they have formed friendships as a result of chatting to strangers. In fact, for around 15 per cent of us, making small talk has brought romance with surprisingly around 5 per cent saying it brought about their marriage.
Catherine Blyth’s tips on making small talk
- Approach small-talk as a treasure hunt: your goal is to find some common ground.
- Remember enthusiasm matters more than what you say – so meet their eye, smile and show how pleased you’re are to meet them.
- Don’t tease, boast, moan, bitch, make personal remarks until you have established a degree of intimacy – and know you have the same sense of humour.
- Don’t ask a question unless you’re genuinely interested in the answer, and have something to add.
- The shortest route to an interesting conversation is to find out what interests them – then find a way to make it relevant to you
- Conversation thrives or dies by how well it flows, so when you make an observation, tag on a question, and that will keep the ball rolling.
- If you notice someone’s glass is empty and yours is still full, you are probably talking too much – let them have their turn!
- Don’t rush to be pally as you could drive them away. Instead, build intimacy in four steps: first exchange greetings, then information, then opinions, then feelings.
- Asking someone for help is a great way to start talking – it instantly flatters someone and gives the conversation a purpose.
- Try asking someone how far they have come – the Queen always asks it!
Regional differences
Based on length, frequency and time spent conversing – as well as those that loathe and how well other cities rate them we have devised a ‘loose lips league table’ of Britain:
| City | Length of conversations | Hate it | Frequency | Each day | Rated by others | Total |
| Belfast | 10 | 8 | 10 | 1 | 7 | 36 |
| Cardiff | 8 | 9 | 9 | 3 | 4 | 33 |
| Glasgow | 9 | 5 | 3 | 9 | 6 | 32 |
| Birmingham | 7 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 3 | 31 |
| Newcastle | 1 | 10 | 1 | 10 | 9 | 31 |
| Liverpool | 2 | 3 | 6 | 5 | 10 | 26 |
| London | 3 | 4 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 25 |
| Bristol | 5 | 7 | 8 | 2 | 1 | 23 |
| Leeds | 6 | 2 | 2 | 7 | 2 | 19 |
| Manchester | 4 | 1 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 19 |

And now there are the surprising (or not really) healthy benefits that come with playing online bingo. The amazing statistics involved and the history of the game. Read the posts below…….
Bingo Ettiquette 101 – Chat Rooms -
To Speak or Not to Speak – That is the question on many Bingo Players minds when they enter a new bingo chat room. Love bingo has investigated the social divide of the Chat Room Watchers and the Chat Room Contributors.
Now, first of all there is nothing wrong with being a chat room watcher or a chat room participator, it is a complete personal preference. There are many reasons why some people like chatting in the chat rooms more than others, for example, the main contributors are usually players who have played on the site for a long period of time, e.g – the regulars. These players know each other and the CMs, so chatting in this instance is simply between friends with a common interest – Online Bingo.
Other players may like to simply read the chat more than to contribute. This could be because the chat room topics shift quickly and it may be difficult to keep up .

Here is an interesting article that should encourage bingo novices to go and play around with some no deposit bingo sites
————————————————–
It didn’t matter what I tried as a child, even if I happened to be good at it, I was always told it was beginner’s luck. And even as I grew
up people continued to say “Ah, it’s just beginners luck.”
Thinking a little about the psychology behind the phenomenon of beginner’s luck doesn’t make life seem very encouraging.
Does this mean that society doesn’t have a very elevated view of itself? Should we really be surprised when someone who is inexperienced in a game (or other) can be a winner first time around?
Recently I embarked on an adventure of playing no deposit bingo to try out my theory of programming the mind into a perpetual state of something like beginners luck.
I have to admit that I am doing very well so far out of this whole no deposit bingo adventure and hope to continue to prove my theory correct, as I gather in plenty of winnings! So how does this work?
In fact beginner’s luck is based on the fact that a relaxed focus on what we are doing is often better than a pressured or stressed focus.
The term has most often been used in gambling and sport situations, but is also used in
other scenarios.
Speculations say that beginner’s luck comes from a disconnection between the player and the pressure of the game or event. The newcomer lacks experience and does not have the additional stress of people expecting him to do well.
Looking at this from the experienced player’s point of view, this person may feel the pressure of those who have certain expectations of him.
However on top of this the chance of having beginner’s luck diminishes with experience as people create habitual reality-tunnels. This is the habitual way we are likely to see the world.
So if you believe and think positively, and you realise that reality is what you make it, then it is feasible to continue to have beginner’s luck. Or perhaps you would just do away with beginner’s luck altogether and create a different phenomenon such as relaxed luck.
The approach would depend on how you view the world. Are you a glass half full or a glass half empty person?
Are you trapped in negative habitual reality-tunnels which present the world to you as a rather dangerous place, a place to be conquered, not enjoyed.
Life is a chain of events and reactions, so if you can change your reactions there’s a strong chance you can change your life.
Since the 1970s there has been a massive growing interest in NLP -neuro linguistic programming. My simple point of view on this is that it is finding the way to re-program your reactions in order to achieve more positive outcomes.
This simple explanation is very basic and if this is a subject of interest to you there are numerous websites and books that will do it a lot more justice than I have.
NLP is now used by many people in personal and business situations, and this system aims to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, so that they have the possibility to change their patterns of emotional and mental behaviour.
The first step is taking responsibility for your own life, and taking time to become more aware about your reactions in an honest way.
You can apply the law of attraction which says that people’s thoughts, both unconscious and conscious, dictates the reality of their lives, whether they realise it or not.
This brings us back to beginner’s luck – how do we fit this with the law of attraction?
It is the frame of mind that is important here. When you feel that you are beginning something, your mind is in the state the Zen Buddhists call “Shoshin” – the Beginner’s Mind. It is eager, open and has less preconceptions and is therefore full of possibilities.
So try to adopt an “everything is possible” attitude to re-create the feeling of beginner’s luck and see how this affects your life.
Play with this and have fun. Take it into new or old situations and test it out.
You can even try it out online by playing no deposit bingo which is a lot of fun, and you can even meet people in the chat rooms when you go to an online bingo website.
It’s one way to test out whether you can harness this theory!
It is simple to grasp why bingo is such an enjoyable game. There’s nothing like the excitement of waiting for that number that will complete your pattern, not to mention the high that comes with winning that bingo jackpot!
Generally people may well think of the game as synonymous to the number one retirement home activity but there’s more the game than that. Bingo is in fact being lauded as one of those games that can really enhance the way your brain performs the more you take part in it.
Studies have revealed that playing bingo significantly improves our brains’ capability to concentrate, memorize, and react to particular situations. Studies completed by the Southampton university Psychology Department have shown that bingo produced a sizeable increase in the recall, pace, and accuracy of people who played the game compared to those who did not. The study was composed of 112 participants who ranged in ages from 18 to 82. This group was separated in to two: Those who played the game on a regular basis, and those who did not. Results showed that those who played bingo on a regular basis performed better in quickness and accuracy trials than those who did not. The older players did better when it came to accuracy while the younger ones showed extra speed when it came to performing particular tasks.
Julie Winston, one of the researchers, affirmed that their study was barely a small part of a growing body of research that aimed to look at how engaging in mind-stimulating activities like bingo can improve brain activity. She concluded that additional research is required to observe just how the mind works when it is used to play games like bingo, and how this activity can help improve the mind’s performance.
Engaging in activities like playing bingo is especially beneficial for elderly folks. People who are at or past the prime of their lives are more prone to memory loss, slower reaction speeds, and over-all decline in mental performance as a consequence of aging and deteriorating neurons. A helpful way to prevent this from happening is to exercise the brain on a regular basis, and playing bingo is one of the ways to do that. The good thing about this is that you can have fun while you exercise your brain.
Ultimately, playing bingo is not only beneficial for your brain, it may possibly be good for your heart too. Focusing on the game can keep your mind off the things that are stressing you out. Bingo is also a great way to keep in contact with old friends and meet new ones. Keeping a healthy social life is effective in keeping seclusion and depression at bay.

Online bingo is of course relatively new, and as the popularity of the internet grows with the widespread use of computers everywhere so does online bingo. However the game itself originates from the 16th century and has been enjoyed in different forms since then.
Italy had it’s lottery called Lo Giuoco del Lotto and bingo stems from it. France became inluenced when the game spread and became known as Le Lotto. It was primarily played by the French aristocracy. Next came Germany and differing variations of bingo as we know it was used in the 19th century as an educational tool, to teach children, with spelling, multiplication tables and even history. This is an early example of the way bingo exercises the brain . See the Health Benefits of Bingo.
Lotto then became popular at county fairs and carnivals right across Europe. It then became known as Beano as it developed into a game in which a caller would pick numbered disks from a box and players would use beans to cover their numbers when called. If a player could cover a horizontal, verticle or diagonal line on their card they would shout “Beano!” and claim their prize. This is like a traditional bingo game of today, in which players shout “house!” when their line of numbers is completed.
In the 1930′s , whilst travelling in Germany, an American salesman named Ed Lowe came upon the game of Beano at a carnival. He recognised it’s huge popularity and made the decision to take the idea back to America. There he introduced it to friends, one of which was a female guest who allegedly called out “Bingo!” instead of “Beano!” in her excitement at winning.
Two varieties of Lowe’s first bingo games appeared: A 12 card set that cost a dollar and a 24 card set that cost two dollars. News of the game spread and a priest based in Pennsylvania came up with the notion of using bingo to raise funds for his struggling church. He bought several sets of the bingo game, but came across problems when each game produced more than one winner. There needed to be just one winner for each game so Lowe enlisted the help of a mathematician at Columbia University named Carl Leffler to try and overcome this challenge . Leffler painstakingly produced 6,000 bingo card numerical variations. This meant that there was now just one winner for every game. The increased number of bingo cards made the game a staple fund raiser at churches across the nation and this new development saw bingo’s popularity spread quickly. The high demand led to the publishing of bingo’s first instructional guide and soon after a monthly newsletter called The Blotter. Following Lowe’s introduction of bingo, there were many imitators. Although Lowe could try and protect the name Bingo, he could not claim rights to the origin of the game. Instead he asked that his competitors pay him just one dollar a year each in return for being permitted to use the name bingo. As a result, Bingo became the generic name for all variations that we know today, including internet bingo and online bingo.Throughout the 1930s, a variant of bingo was played in motion picture theaters. One night a week customers would receive free bingo cards with their admission tickets and could win cash and prizes worth hundreds of pounds. Bingo’s popularity continued to grow and was formalised in this country in 1968 with the UK Gaming Act. In 1986 the National Bingo Game was legalised, allowing the same game of bingo to be played simultaneously at bingo halls across the country. One of the biggest changes to affect bingo since the game began back in the 16th century was of course the emergence of the internet bingo game. 2003 saw the very first online bingo UK sites which are now so popular that it’s difficult to believe their history is so very new. More than three million people play online bingo games and traditional offline bingo, so isn’t it time you got in on the action? Although bingo is the only gambling activity more popular with women than with men (roughly 70% of bingo players are women) the game continues to evolve and is increasingly popular with younger people of both sexes. Well, playing bingo is a type of gambling albeit compared to other forms and games, it is regarded as a softer one. Most people can leave playing the game after they are out of money but some cannot and it can then start to get out of hand. Like any addict it can effect the people closest to them bringing more misery. Sometimes there is a secrecy and spouses or close family members find out months into the downward spiral that there is a problem. If there is growing debt and money being owed to various sources then help must be sort after immediately. Unfortunately when things have become this bad then the person is often abandoned by their family, or homes are repossesed.
So how is bingo addiction recognised? Well there is a tendency to play at different intervals during the day and night and sleep can be lost because of it. All you think about is playing the game and when you are not playing, you are researching it or thinking about when is the next game. You play because something has gone wrong in your life and it provides you a way to get away from it .Work can be effected , where tasks that should be completed are put on the’back burner’ whilst time is spent playing bingo online, hoping the boss or fellow workers don’t notice. You feel guilty because even though you tried to stop, you cannot. You keep playing because you feel a strong need to make up the money you lost. You may start to steal money from friends, family, or strangers. Credit cards may be maxed out from the cash withdrawals to bingo sites when there is an addiction.
There may be the classic denial of there being anything wrong while friends and family start to worry. Getting found out at work after the addition becomes out of control will proberbly mean dismissal. Or not turning up at all for work so bingo can be played instead.
Most online bingo sites check on the players habits by giving an estimation on how much activity will take place during the month , and will monitor usage and warn if it is exceeded. Of course the system cannot get the help a person needs for addiction but it can help prevent a worsening gambling debt .
If help is needed it is important to talk to others about the problem and like all addiction,
work cannot begin with the releasing of it until it is acknowledged that one is addictedThey say God helps those who help themselves. Thus, if you’re really determined to get rid of your addiction, there is no one who can help you except yourself. If you really want to control your gambling addiction, just do it! Exert some self control and try to abstain yourself from indulging into fervent gambling.

Here are some very interesting statistics that begins to tell the story of what has been an internet phenominum and how the land-based game is ajusting.
* The global gross gaming yield of bingo (excluding the U.S.) has been estimated to grow to one billion dollars this year (2010).
* Also estimated is that the wagering in charitable bingo, which is played in 49 of the 50 United States, is more than $3 billion per year.
* In the UK online bingo for women between the ages of 20 and 25, bingo has become their most popular leisure activity.
* The current thinking is that about 50,000 of the approximately 3 million land-based bingo players have moved to playing bingo online. 90% of these are below the age of 50,
which challenges the notion that bingo is for older people.
* Women are thought to make up 85% of online players .
* Even though the online bingo market is growing very fast, only 1% of land-based bingo players have moved on to playing online bingo. This provides evidence that the
online market has exceptional potential for greater growth.
* There are about 100 million Bingo players worldwide, 80% of Bingo players are women in the 30 – 50 age group. The other 20% o are men in the equivalent age range.
* About 85% of bingo players play online bingo and more than 50% of the online bingo players are so dedicated and love the games so much that they play every single day.
* Contrary to popular belief, research shows that there is only a relatively small number of bingo players over the age of 65.
* Of the online bingo players 20% have been playing for less than 2 years, 20% have been playing for less than 5 years, and 40% have been playing for more than 5 years.
* 69.2% of online bingo players choose 75 ball bingo, while 30.8% prefer to play 90 ball Bingo.
* 83% of online bingo players engage in other activities whilst playing online bingo.

Virgin Games analysed over 100,000,000 separate wagers, based purely on chance, placed over the past three years in order to create a map of the UK’s ‘luckspots’- handy for those trying to protect themselves from bad luck on Friday 13th. The unluckiest spots in the UK were also highlighted with Belfast, Perth and Newbury topping the list – residents in these areas would be advised to keep hold of a horseshoe or rabbit’s foot for the duration of Friday 13th.
“Friday 13th falls three times in 2009, so we thought it would be interesting to see if whether some regions in the UK are luckier than others”, said Simon Burridge, CEO of Virgin Games. “We matched the success of our huge database of players against the UK’s postcodes, and were surprised at just how much variation there was between regions. It’s just a bit of fun, of course – but if I was at all superstitious I’d be heading to St. Albans this Friday 13th.”
So for those who worry when they walk under ladders, smash mirrors or spill salt perhaps they should be considering moving to St. Albans. Not only has the suburban district been crowned one of the best places to live in the UK – it was recently selected as the ‘ Mayfair’ spot on the British Cities version of Monopoly – its residents can also consider themselves the luckiest, over four times more likely to win than residents living in Belfast. In St. Albans, a bet of £1 can expect to see an average profit of 83p – compared to a loss of 60p if the same wager was made over the Irish Sea in Belfast.
So is there really such a thing as good or bad luck? Of a kind, says behavioural psychologist Donna Dawson: “It’s interesting to consider the behaviour that can lead to bad or good luck and how that could manifest regionally across the UK. Luck is based on a number of factors; skill, chance but of course also mindset. A negative outlook versus a positive one can have a really big effect on luck; if enough people in one area have one or the other outlook towards life, this could very well create a snowball effect geographically.”
